Recovery mode can be used to restore an iPhone when it is not usually detected by iTunes. An iPhone can go into recovery mode by either holding the power and home button until the there is an iTunes logo with a USB cable pointing towards the iTunes logo. Or you can send an iPhone into recovery mode by opening up ZiPhone and selecting advanced options. From there you can select Recovery Mode.

TERMS
Activate- The state of the iPhone where you can access everything and be able to run applications and sync with iTunes
Jailbreak- A jailbroken iPhone allows you to install third party applications and games from the installer.
Unlock- Usually when you buy a phone from a carrier they lock it so only that carriers service can be used on the phone. In this case, AT&T and Apple have locked the iPhone to only be used on AT&T. However, when a phone is unlocked it can be used on any other network, not only AT&T.
Recovery Mode- The state of the phone where there is an iTunes logo and a power/USB cable is going into the phone on the homecreen.
ZiPhone- AMAZING program that makes unlocking, jailbreaking, and activating the iPhone easier than ever!
Refurbish- Something you are going to want to do if you break your phone and mail it back into Apple for a new one. You can run this in ziPhone. I have sent in an iPhone I have broken and got a new one because it was still under warranty. But i hooked mine up to a car battery and and fried it instead of refurbishing it.
DFU Mode- State at which the iPhone has a blank screen but iTunes detects the iPhone in recovery mode. This version is used to downgrade the phone. The iPhone can go into DFU mode by holding the power and home button for 10 seconds and then releasing the the power button but continue holding the home button. Hold the home button until the iPhone is detected by iTunes in recovery mode. You can also send a iPhone into DFU mode by opening up ZiPhone and going to the advanced settings and selecting DFU mode.
Baseband- A band of signals being sent out of your iPhone before the signals are modulated. Apple has changed the baseband in every new software version for the iPhone.
Bootloader- A code that runs before an operating system starts to run. Apple has put two different bootloaders on the market. The first iPhone to version 1.1.1 had bootloader 3.9 which was EASY to figure out how to unlock. However, at 1.1.2 they changed the bootloader to 4.6 which took forever to unlock until Mr. George Hotz came in and unlocked it with software.
Firmware- Usually used as a synonym with the word "version" used by Apple. An example is version 1.1.1 or 1.1.3. Some might say firmware 1.1.1 or 1.1.3. I choose to say "firmware."
Installer- Application run on the iPhone that allows you still install all your third party applications and customize your phone.
Source- A url added to the installer wher you can download apps from third parties that are not listed in community sources. You will usually find sources on websites that develop their own applications or hacking forums for the iPhone. Go to instructions to learn how to add a source.
Apps- Short for the term 'Applications.' <<< for some reason I get that question a lot
Restore- When all the files you have added are deleted and the phone returns to its original settings out of the box. This action can be done in iTunes by clicking the "restore" button. The firmware will get updated if it is not up to date. However, if you hold shift while clicking on restore then you can select a firmware you downloaded.
Upgrade/Update- Upgrades and updates the firmware on your iPhone. Can be done in iTunes.

EDIT: in everything iPhone the list is bolded and the words are seperated...doesnt look like this. i just copied and pasted the words onto here
